NKPORO ENTREPRENEURSHIP SUMMIT 2021 ON FISH FARMING

 


On the 2nd January, 2021; NNACHET FARMS was invited as a guest speaker (and ably represented by it's CEO; Nnachetam Reginald Chigbogu) at the 2021 Edition (First Edition) of Nkporo Entrepreneurship Summit on Fish Farming held at Etitiama Nkporo Community, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria.

The Summit even though was the first edition, was a very impactful one; where the youths and women of the community were exposed and enlightened about the lucrative and entrepreneurship aspects fish farming (first of it's kind in the community).

After which the organizers empowered the youths with some free start-up packs (ponds and some catfish fingerlings).

All thanks to ICHAKA FOUNDATION WORLDWIDE (the organizers) for such great inspiration and insights of making this New Year a memorable one for the community and participants of this year's Summit.

CANNIBALISM AMONG CATFISHES

by Chigbogu, Nnachetam Catfishes exhibit the EAT OR BE EATEN contest , which this term cannibalism describes. Cannibalism is the process whereby a fish eats another fish. This is a very common phenomenon among catfishes. Because, catfishes are omnivorous in nature, they tend to cannibalize on themselves, and because, although they are hatched the same time but do not have uniform growth rate, they tend to be cannibalistic in nature. Due to the lack of uniformity in their growth rate, the ones that shout-out faster (shooters) tend to predate on the smaller and weaker ones. Catfishes cannibalize a lot, when they are left for a long time in a pond without sorting, or when they are not being fed adequately. Catfishes start cannibalizing early in their life time (from fry/post-fry stage), and this has been a major and common problem for catfish farmers.
